1/4 of 2018

For a good quarter of the year, I busied myself with mostly offline activities, even took a quick experimental sabbatical of sorts from social media. Thus, it took a while to get back to writing on this seemingly stale, abandoned blog. It’s easy to point to work as the usual suspect but not exactly, though it’s been as challenging (read: stressful) as ever, what with the changing tides in business, I actually have this renewed determination to make things happen, create and recreate the new and old, pursue better if not best outcomes, be the teacher and learner given the opportunity, not only professionally, most importantly for my own person.

It was this decluttering project that got me somewhat always weirdly excited, restless even. While I was slowly giving up some of my treasured possessions, starting with spare and unused gadgets, collectible toys and lately the pricey sneakers (thanks to carousell) I somehow regained this appreciation of only having a few, basic but important stuff, and pay attention to things that matter most. This means more time and energy spent for my well being, ultimately equating to more treasured moments with family and friends. And as if addicted to shopping, though the exact opposite, I no longer buy “want” things as I am now buying more “need” things and was always on the look out for the next extra or unused stuff that I can either sell or donate or pass on to relatives.

Sharing our Instagram’ing habits at #IMSocialxUST

I was a speaker at the first GMA News Think Before You Click and YouScoop Sessions, held at the University of Santo Tomas, and hosted by Thomasian alumnus and iJuander host Cesar Apolinario and Journalism student Samantha Belmonte, sharing the story behind IGersManila Philippines, along with UST Political Science student Justin Decastro, of “the boy who cried books” social media fame, and Jay Jaboneta, co-founder of the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation.

While I initially thought of it as a small gathering, I got nervous when the organizers declared the hall (which UST students lovingly call BGPOP) to be SRO, buzzing with students probably curious about the session speakers and topics, as the event was also livestreamed online via gmanews.tv/imsocial. continue reading »

Advocacy and social media talk at the Buklod-UPLB forum

imageIt was an invitation I initially wanted to decline, but at the same time wanted to do, as it’s been a while since I had a speaking engagement, and I didn’t want to let this opportunity pass knowing that the talk’s target audience are students. It’s scheduled on a Monday the 17th of February and the location is about 2 to 3 hours from our residence – that means waking up as early as 2 in the morning because my car’s coding that day – but it was the former student leader in me that got me convinced it’s worth the long trip, and missing a few hours of sleep.

Actually it was my wife that got me into this, who’s friend’s daughter, Inah Peralta, is studying at the University of the Philippines in Los Baños, and who happens to be a member and the Program Committee Head of Buklod-UPLB‘s forum entitled “Youth Republic V” with the theme “#GamerGeneration: Youth Creativity and Innovation” that aims to raise the level of social and political awareness, leadership and nationalistic passion of students. Tagging along my fellow IGersManila moderators Ed Calaycay and Petim Maminta as co-speakers, and of course Mommy A, we reached Los Baños Laguna by sunrise, and started snapping photos as soon as we set foot at the park where the iconic UP oblation stood, marveling at the towering trees surrounding the campus. continue reading »

At the PH+SocialGood Summit

Good vibes are not enough – felt really good that Rapple.com invited me and IGersManila and we obliged – to be part of the 2013 Manila Social Good Summit. Organized by Rappler, Google and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), this year’s summit aims to come up with concrete next action steps that are possible now to ensure a better future by the year 2030, thus the thematic hashtag #2030Now, focused on climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in the Philippines.

Vote out loud for TattAwards 2013!

It’s the only award-giving body that recognizes Filipino online ingenuity – aimed at discovering creatively passionate individuals who use social media to speak out and make a difference – already on its 3rd year, Tatt Awards 2013 is here! Launched at URBN Bar and Kitchen at the Fort Strip, 13 for 2013 seems to be the theme this year, as it honors 13 different categories, including Instagram Phenom of the Year, with which we hope IGersManila, the open community for Filipino Instagram’ers around the world, gets a nomination.

image

Nominations will be accepted until May 10, so if you have a Facebook, Twitter and/or Google account, all you have to do is log on to www.TattAwards2013.com where you can fill out the nomination form and get more detailed mechanics. You can nominate as many as you want, in any of the 13 categories, and even create a new category, which might be included in the official list, but only if it gets the most relevant and unique nominations.

So go ahead and vote out loud and keep the good vibes rolling!

Obama’s golden tweet

It’s as if US President Barack Obama had everyone retweeting history in the making, confirming his reelection victory via Twitter with a straightforward four more years and a heartwarming photo with wife Michelle, making it not only the most retweeted of 2012, but the most retweeted ever.

Now that’s a golden tweet worth remembering.

At the Tatt Awards 2012 Awards Night

Was invited last 29th of June to Globe Tattoo’s Tatt Awards 2012 Awards Night, not only to witness the recognition of the “raddest digital rockstars” but also as a presenter.

At the NBC Tent, guests were greeted with this theatrical billboard, aside from the fabulous red carpet, the requisite photo wall, and that big display panel that surprisingly doubles as touch-screen.

I just had late snack at the office, but who can resist that sumptuous dinner? Burp! More wine please. Oh and that round of instrumental rock music from Pulso (new band but already sounding awesome) opening, serenading the show was simply nostalgic, I realized how I miss NU 107 on radio.

After dinner, presenters were called for briefing backstage, and there I was forgetting to get overwhelmed with celebrities, instead sneaking a snapshot of these cool searchlight trophies! Then I busied myself with double-tapping duties for @IGersManila.

Rocking the night away and counting down the World Social Media Day in the Philippines! I was alone but thankfully it was an event to celebrate social networks so everyone’s nice and approachable.

With Tatt Council member and photographer Wig Tysmans presenting the award for The Visualizer.

The Visualizer winner, the tandem of Ryan Vergara and Garovs Garovillo for EverywhereWeShoot.com, with Wig Tysmans and hosts Georgina Wilson and Gino Quillamor. It’s ay-jee-ers-ma-ni-la my dear Georgina, hehehe.
