Speaking at the Sesquicentennial Leadership Forum held yesterday at the Ateneo de Manila University, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair awed attendees with his speech “The Leader as a Nation-Builder in a Time of Globalization” relating of course his own leadership experience that’s to be admired by third-world-patriots such as the PI.
Credited with bringing peace to Northern Ireland and is now envoy to the Middle East for the United States, Russia, the United Nations and the European Union, Blair was asked by none other than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for advice on bringing peace to southern Philippines with its long history of separatist bloodshed. Malacañang actually wants Tony Blair in the adviser payroll.
So is that accepting the fact that we can’t really solve our own problems (and so we need British expertise this time)? Or is this simply PR work.
You can bet on opposition Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero to uncover it for us, saying “Tony Blair is just good for public relation or pogi points of the Malacañang,” adding that the Philippines has no effective policy to resolve the security issues in Mindanao (The Manila Times).
Tony Blair sure is charming and more than willing to help. He’s Northern Ireland’s savior but can’t we Pinoy’s save ourselves? Bloody hell…
